De'Longhi Dedica EC685M Review

A very narrow machine for small kitchens, with an easy-to-use steam wand and a ceiling you should know about.

The De'Longhi Dedica EC685M costs around $249 on Amazon and is best known for one thing: it is less than six inches wide. If counter space is your main constraint, that matters more than any spec on the box.

What you get

A slim body. About 5.9 inches wide, 13 inches deep, and 12 inches tall, so it fits where nothing else will.

Fast heat-up. A thermoblock heating system gets it ready in under a minute, around 40 seconds according to listed specs.

An auto-frothing steam wand. It uses a Pannarello-style attachment that mixes air into the milk for you, which makes it easier for beginners to get foam without practice.

A pressurized portafilter with three baskets. You get single and double baskets for ground coffee plus one for ESE pods. Pressurized baskets forgive an imperfect grind.

A roughly 1.1 liter (about 35 oz) tank that is removable for filling.

Where it compromises

A lower ceiling. Because the portafilter is pressurized and relatively small, it limits how good your shots can get and how much you can upgrade. Keep in mind that the "15 bar" on the box describes the pump's maximum, not brewing pressure. Here's what that really means.

Less control over milk. The Pannarello wand is easier to use, but it gives you less control over texture than a bare commercial wand.

You still need a grinder. It has no built-in one. See our grinder guide.

Check the model number. De'Longhi also sells a newer, different machine called the Dedica Duo (EC890M), which has a lower rating and different features. Make sure the listing says EC685M.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you live in an apartment or have a small kitchen, want a straightforward first machine, and mostly drink milk-based drinks.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you have the room for a larger machine and want more room to improve. The Gaggia Classic Pro is a better long-term pick.

Verdict

The Dedica isn't trying to be the most capable machine. It's the one that fits, heats quickly, and makes a decent latte with little fuss. For small spaces, that is a real advantage.
