How to Descale and Clean Your Espresso Machine

The single biggest reason budget machines die early isn't the price point — it's skipped maintenance.

Mineral scale buildup is the quiet killer of home espresso machines. It clogs the internal tubing, throws off temperature, and eventually causes pumps to fail — and it's completely preventable with maintenance that takes about ten minutes every couple of weeks.

Daily (30 seconds)

Wipe the steam wand immediately after steaming milk, before it dries on — dried milk is far harder to remove and breeds bacteria in the wand tip. Purge the portafilter basket of used grounds and rinse it.

Weekly (5 minutes)

Backflush if your machine has a blind filter (most semi-automatics with a three-way solenoid valve do — check your manual). This clears built-up coffee oils from the group head, which otherwise turn rancid and add bitterness to every shot. If your machine doesn't support backflushing, a thorough group head brush scrub does most of the same job.

Monthly (10–15 minutes)

Descale using a citric-acid-based descaling solution (not vinegar — it can degrade rubber seals over repeated use, while citric acid is gentler and just as effective). Run the solution through the machine per your model's instructions, followed by at least two full water-only rinse cycles. If you're in a hard-water area, do this every 3–4 weeks instead of monthly.

Signs you've waited too long

Slower shot times than usual, inconsistent temperature, unusual noise from the pump, or visible white residue around the water tank or group head are all signs scale has built up past where a routine cycle will easily clear. At that point, a longer descaling soak (or in bad cases, a professional service visit) may be needed.

One habit that prevents most of this

Use filtered water, not straight tap water, if your local water is even moderately hard. It's the single change that most reduces how often you need to descale — often cutting the frequency in half.
